How to tell whether it is the real thing
Look for three signals. Is the lahmacun thin enough to roll, or thick like a pizza base? Is the Adana kebab minced by hand, or extruded from a machine? Is the coffee brewed in a cezve and served with water, or pulled from an espresso machine and called Turkish? A kitchen that gets all three right is cooking to method, not to a menu description.
Where we are
SkaZka Bali on Jl. Raya Sanggingan No.88, Ubud. That is the northern edge of Ubud, on the Sanggingan road toward Campuhan and Neka Museum — about seven minutes from Ubud Palace, ten from Monkey Forest, and a five-minute walk from the top of the Campuhan Ridge Walk. Parking on site, which is not nothing in central Ubud.
What to order on a first visit
A meze board and warm flatbread to start. Then either a shared grill board or a köfte Turkish pita if you are two. Lahmacun as a side to tear and share. Napoleon and Turkish coffee to close — and if it is still early, order a second round and stay another half hour.
Morning in Ubud, Turkish style
Kahvaltı — the Turkish breakfast table — runs until noon: cheeses, olives, tomato, cucumber, honey with kaymak, sucuk, menemen and warm pide bread with Turkish coffee. It is a fine way to spend a cool Ubud morning before the heat arrives.
